ST readingterm 3 Week 5 : Government acts to curb younger smokers

Government acts to curb younger smokers

Qn 1 ) What are some measures by the government to curb smoking?

They implemented heavier fines ( $30-$100) for underage students who smoke.People who label on tobacco products such as "light", "mild","low-tar" and "ultra light" will be banned due to its misleading.Cigarillos and mini cigars will have to be sold in packs of 20 instead of in 10 to make them expensive for students to buy.Places that sell health and youth-centric products such as chinese medicine halls and game arcade will be barred from selling tobacco products and this will decrease the number of tobacco retailers from more than 5,000 now.Lastly, the government also lowers permitted tar and nicotine levels.

Qn 2) How succesful these measures would be? Support your answers with reasons

I feel that these measures would not be very effective. It would be difficult for those addicted smokers to stop smoking as they are unable to kick off their habbit.Although fines have gone higher and the amount of license is taken away, they would still find ways to continue smoking and secretive methods to sell.Students can afford the prices of ciagrettes and even if the number of ciagrettes per pack decreases and prices increases, they would still continue to buy it.They think that these measures were not too strict. To them, money is not the issue.Having fun and acting cool is their purpose of buying ciagrettes. Those underaged students can hide at some places preventing them from getting caught.

ST reading. term 3 Week 4

1) Pg 4: Her world’s a stage

Do you consider yourself an artistic person?
What are your opinions of the theatre scene in Singapore?

No.I do not consider myself as an artistic person as it requires the ability to enhance creative learning skills such as drawing or designing in our daily lifestyle.I do have the talent and i feel that i am not quite interested in learning them and it takes a lot of effort.Rather than focusing on my weak points, i would rather strengthen my other perspectives.I do not have the skill to admire one's art and understand the true meaning of it.

I felt that the theatre scene in Singapore is very impressive. It has a good infrastructure and provides good facilities for everyone. The huge range of seats are comfortable,it is well air-conditioned and lastly it has good audio functions and this is why those professionals from other countries would not mind to perfom in Singapore.

2) Pg 10: Drink-and-Eat MRT Riders on the rise

How do you feel about MRT commuters eating and drinking blatantly on the train?

I felt that those commuters who are eating and drinking are very inconsiderate. They do not care about the well-being of other people. Some food have strong smell and some people would not like smelling it.Furthermore, the food may drop on the floor or on the seat while consuming, making the train dirtier. No one would thus seat on it.The people near it would feel unhappy and annoyed.Who would want to travel a long journey in an dirty environment?! No one would. What about those foreigners who board on the train and witnessed it, it would be undesirable. They would have a bad impression on Singapore as well as the citizens.Hence i hope that the MRT management would do do something about it such as increasing the rates of fines. This would lessen the inconsidereate act.

ST reading Term 2 Week 3 :"HFMD cases near epidemic level"

Q1:
How does HFMD spread and what are some of the preventive measures that the childcare centres and kindergartens have taken to ensure that the disease is contain?

HMFD is spread through body fluids. It is passed through children who share toys that they might have put it inside their mouths. Many of the Childcare Centres and kindergartens are taking precautions to avoid spreading the virus by spending more money to thoroughly clean its premises every quarter.Usual health screening and cleaning measures are also taken in place.Children who are likely contracted with the disease with symptoms ( ulcers, spots and fever) are sent home and their parents are asked to send them home immediately.Last but not least, the children in childcare centres and kindergartens have been drilled into a routine of heading straight to the toilet to wash up and clean theri hands with a sanitiser before classes and meals.

Q2
In your opinion, what implications will the childcare centres face if the HFMD issue escalates further?

The childcare centres will have to face several implications if the HFMD issue escalates further. The centres will have to shut down for 10 days for them to sanitised and cleaned thoroughly before opening. They must ensure that the diesease is entirely wipe out before they could reopen.Parents might also make complains or press charges against the centre for the negligience over their child's hygiene and that their child have contracted the disease. They might even claim for the medical fees from them.Parents would than want their kids to stay at home or transfer them to another cihldcare centre. With this in mind, the centre will soon lose a lot of children resulting in lesser school fees being paid. The staff and teachers will also be affected and there might be a retrenchment if the centre suffered heavy losses. The centre reputation would also be spoilt. Hence if the HMFD issue really escalates further, not only does the children gets affected, but also the staff and families will affected too.

St reading Term 2 week 2: Sorry guys, these lots are not for you

Q1) What were some of the reasons cited in the article why there was a need to have parking lots for women only in these buildings?

The first reason would be the parking lots are located near the entrance of the building.Hence it would be more convenient as they would not need to travel such a long distance. It would be even more tiring if they wore heels. They only have to walk up the ramp to reach the entrance to the lobby.Another reason is that women feel safer parking nearer to the entrance.

Q2) In your opinion, do you think it is necessary to allocate parking lots for women only? Why?

a) I think it not necessary to allocate parking lots for women only as it would be unfair to other people. Why must they be given special rights just because they are women? Since most of the drivers in Singapore are men, what if during peak hours, when the other car lots are full and the reserved lots for women are empty, isnt that making it difficult for other people like men to find a lot to park their car? Also, there may be other people who may need these lots too, like the disabled, the families and elderly.

b)Which group of people do you then feel should be allocated such priority parking? Explain.

I think the group of people who should be allocated such priority parking would be pragnant ladies, families with small children/babies , handicapped people and those whose family has elderly people. For pregnant ladies, they would not need to tire themself by walking so far as they are carrying two lives.Since the priority parking lots are larger than the normal ones, for families with small children/ babies they would need a larger space to take their prams out.The handicapped people also need this lots as it would be difficult for them to push their wheelchair a long distance throughout the carparks to the lobbies and also they need a bigger space. This would surely take a long time and most importantly, they have to make sure if there is any vehicles coming in their way at the same time when they are pushing it.Accidents may happen.
Last but not least, thr elderly would take a long time to walk because of their weak legs dues to osteoporosis. They tend to walk slower than normal people do, and is inconvenient for them to travel so long wasting so much time.

ST wk 6 : Help for single mum in downturn"-

Q1) What project was launched to help single mums? Briefly explain what is this project about.

This project is called " WeCare for U".It is to help single mothers who are likely to face a tough time in the current downturn, to get help in finding a job. It reaches help to divorcees, widows and other single mothers who not only have a tougher time juggling work and family but find it hard to get help.It allows them to be able to join support groups that arrange activities for them and their children in these trying times.
Apart from helping those out of work to find jobs, NTUC's Women's Development Secretariat (WDS) will encourage those who cannot go out to work to make use of other skills, such as baking or sewing, so as to help themselves to generate an income. This is because they lack of steady source of income which is one of the greatest difficulties experience for the single mums. Also, the WDS is working with the Law Society of Singapore to produce a comprehensive guidebook for single mothers to teach them how and where to find legal help.

Q2) Imagine you come across a single mum who is unemployed, what are some advice you can give her? Who can she turn to?

Being a single mum is not easy as one must take the role of a father and mother. They have to work and at the same time, take care of their children without the support from their husbands. They are the only sole breadwinner. If i meet a single mum who is unemployed, i would try to find various supporting organisations/ groups that help them in finding them a suitable job with a pay that is manageable to support the family and also some emotional support to prevent her from being stress. Also, i would encourage her and tell her that she is not alone, and there is always people around you to help. This is to ensure that she carries an important role in her family and therefore can make her less likely to give up boosting her confidence level. I would also suggest her to comfront her family about her problems encountered as they are the closest kin with her. They will understand her better than anyone else does.

Week 5 :NTU Death Fall

Question 1:
What were some indications which showed that the victim was facing problems before he committed the rash act?

He played computer games for long hours, was seldom seen outside of his hostel room. He did not reply his friend's MSN messages. Several students that said he was once a cheerful and jovial person.but when the final semester began in early January, he began to change. He played the game "World Of Warcraft" for as long as six hours although he had a deadline of March 10 to submit the draft for his Final-Year Project (FYP).His friends said that this was unusual because he usually stopped playing when preparing for exams or when projects were due. Some people said that he was having problems coping with his FYP.Also, two weeks before his death, he abruptly cut off all communication with his friends.

Question 2:
(a) Is it very stressful being a student in Singapore? Explain.
(b) What are some problems you face as a student which adds to your stress level

a) Yes.I think that being a student in Singapore is stressful as we not only face stress in school but also from our family. Some of the students have been forced by parents to take up many tuition. In school ,we had to take many subjects.Tests and examination occurs very frequently. There are always homework to be done. Some students also had to go for CCa.Therefore, there might not be enough time. We also have to meet the expectations of our parents thus we push ourselves harder and ended up being stress.Olvl is approaching in 1 more year time and most of the students are feeling anxious and nervous about whether they are going to do badly thus some of them may study or revise for a lot of hours and even burn midnight oil not getting enough sleep to ensure they are keeping up with the standards of education.Last but not least, some of the students may have family problems.etc finacial difficulties, parents divorced. Therefore, with all this things into consideration..i felt that it is stress being a student in Singapore.

b) As a student, i faces stress when i am lack behind in a certain topic because there are many subjects and topics to concentrate on.I am a slow learner and does not accept the concepts readily. When this happens, i will do revision and sleep very late till i understand the topic pretty well.I will also feel stress when there are no time for me to do my homework or revise a particular subject when the exam or the dateline of homework is approaching. This is because there are enrichment courses, tuition and CCA affecting my time.

Week 1 "Tuition Crazy"

Sorry teachers i miss out the week 1 St article.
Heres it!!!

Question 1:
State any two reasons mentioned by students why extra tuition was necessary.

The first reason would be that the students might not be able to cope with school's work .Some of them are shy and dare not to consult the teachers for clarifications. The teachers may be also busy and might not be able to help .They felt that tuition would help them improve and score higher marks for their examinations.Tuition classes would help them catch up on school lessons.
Another reason would be that they would be worried that their standard would drop. They want to mantain keeping good grades all the time and thus they felt tuition is necessary.

Question 2:
Do you think it is necessary for you to have tuition? Why?

I believe that tuition is definetly necessary for me.I am a person who has very little confidence.I believe that tuition would help me boost my standard. They may provide more relevant and more detailed notes that the school might not be able to give. This would help me for my o'lvl examination. The classes are also not as big as those in school therefore the teacher would give more attention on us and we could clarify our questions easily.I would only go for tuitions that are really beneficial for me.Tuition could also allow me to learn a new topic before the school teacher starts teaching. This allow me to grasp the concepts readily. With tuition i am able to score good results or even mantain them in my secondary school life.My brother attended the same tuition i am in now and scored 7 points for olvl.He claimed that tuition has really helped him a lot and he might not be able to score A1 for the subjects he went without tuition.
